Poland is a European country with a population of 38.4 million. The country’s rapid economic growth since its transition to a market economy has been remarkably equal – it is one of the only new high-income countries whose income inequality has not increased. While the country’s economy will be hard-hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, it is expected to recover well in 2021. Poland’s strong economic growth for nearly three decades has been driven by its low-cost manufacturing industry and growth as a hub for business services.

Like its economy, the Polish education system has blossomed in recent decades. Major education reforms from 1999 resulted in a dramatic improvement in the OECD PISA study: Poland ranked below the OECD average in the PISA examinations in 2000, but in 2018, it ranked in the top five for all three subjects. Education is expected to play a major role in Poland’s continuing economic development and is a major pillar in the government’s Strategy for Responsible Development.

Though the Polish education system is of high quality, Polish students are increasingly looking abroad for tertiary study. According to UNESCO, in 2017 there were nearly 25,000 internationally mobile Polish students, with the UK as the most popular destination. The vast majority of Polish students in the UK – 83 per cent – are in undergraduate programmes. The most popular subject area for both undergraduates and postgraduates was, by far, business and administrative studies.

In this Market Intelligence Brief, dive into Poland’s demographics, economics and education system. This European country will continue to be an important recruitment market for UK universities for years to come.
